A Patch or Update is a software modification to improve compatibility, add new features, and/or address other problems.

Nowadays patches are mostly distributed automatically by the different stores where games can be bought, like e.g. Steam, PSN, or Xbox Live, while patches for older games had to be actively downloaded and installed. Before the widespread use of broadband internet obtaining patches was difficult and some errors in the early games like the Corner Bug were never fixed. Nowadays patches and updates are far more easily downloaded and installed, mostly even automatically and without the end user knowing about it.

It seems that PC versions of games need patches more often as they are intended to run on a wider variety of target systems, making tweaks and adaptation necessary; however versions for Video Game Consoles are not invulnerable to programming errors.

Classic Games

There are some official patches for Tomb Raider games like the Voodoo patch for Tomb Raider or Patch 52 for Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, as well as some fan made patches to improve compatibility with Operating Systems other than those printed on the box or to give the Level Editor new abilities like higher resolution textures.

For a list of game patches - especially unofficial ones for the classic games - and a place to download, take a look at

The following reason for adding it to the list has been given: The following lists may be incomplete; also, older games need to be added. Further reasons might be found on the "discussion page".
