Marco took his father Gianni's place as leader of a cult called the Fiamma Nera (Black Flame) which religiously believes in the Dagger's legendary power. Gianni had discovered that the Talion needed to unlock the Dagger is locked itself inside the Barkhang Monastery in Tibet, which in turn was locked, requiring a figurine known as the Seraph to open. However, after retrieving the Seraph, the ship Gianni was travelling on sank, leaving Marco to retrieve it from the wreckage.

Lara first meets Marco when she stows aboard his sea plane outside the Opera House in Venice. Instead of killing her, Marco has his thug, Eros, knock her out and imprison her on the Offshore Rig.

While making her escape from the facility, Lara rescues a monk hailing from the monastery. While equipping herself for a deep sea excavation effort to find the Seraph, the monk details the events surrounding his monastery, the Fiamma Nera and the dagger itself. Before he is able to similarily equip himself to accompany Lara, Bartoli shoots him from a balcony above. He and Lara exchange fire, the latter diving with a small submersible to the ocean floor.

Ultimately, Lara is forced to kill Marco when he surrenders his soul to the Dagger by plunging it into his heart and becoming the Dragon.
