Thor's Hammer, called Mjolnir (also Mjölnir or Mjöllnir) is an artefact and a weapon in Tomb Raider Underworld.

It appears in St. Francis Folly from Tomb Raider I and is represented as a giant hammer in the Room of Thor. It is unknown if it can be used to open a portal to Avalon, but as Lara states in the latest Underworld gameplay trailer, "I need Thor's Belt to get his hammer; and I need the hammer to kill a god".

It is powerful weapon belonging to the Norse god Thor, who needed a special pair of iron gauntlets that made him strong enough for its weight and a belt that doubled his godlike strength to wield it.

Meaning, that because Jacqueline Natla has returned in Underworld, Lara may be referring to Natla as the god who is immortal, and must use the hammer to destroy her once and for all. It is theorized that Thor's Hammer is in Underworld because it relates to Jacqueline Natla - hence the fact that Lara encountered it in the Room of Thor in St. Francis Folly.

Thor's Hammer, called Mjolnir (also Mjölnir or Mjöllnir) is an artefact and a weapon in Tomb Raider Underworld.

It is powerful weapon belonging to the Norse god Thor, who needed a special pair of iron gauntlets that made him strong enough for its weight and a belt that doubled his godlike strength to wield it.

Mjolnir was the supremely powerful weapon used by Thor, mainly to fight giants, and then ultimately destroy the Midgard Serpent in the battle of Ragnarök. Only functional when one is equipped with the belt and gauntlets, these artifacts are far more ancient than the mythology that immortalized them and the men who subsequently hid them throughout the world. Norse myth focused solely on Mjolnir's destinied role in killing Jörmungandr, but it conveniently overlooked the fact that Mjolnir is also the only means by which the Midgard Serpent can be released in the first place.
Lara's Journal Entry[1]

History

For more than a thousand years the Thor's Hammer has existed only as a myth, until Lara sets out to find it in 2008.

Discovery

Lara finds the Thor's Hammer in Jan Mayen Island, Norway.

Lara's main objective with the hammer is to use it as a key to Helheim, later in the game she goes force Jacqueline Natla to tell her where Helheim is and then finish her off with the hammer, however it had to wait as only the gods such as herself knew the rituals to open Helheim.

In the end, Lara throws the hammer onto Natla, causing her and the hammer to fall off from the ledge into the blue Eitr river.

Appearance

A black hammer of moderate size, decorative nordic carvings. Glows blue light occasionally, especially when used.

Powers

Legend holds that he who wields the hammer has the power to smash mountains into valleys and the strength to destroy even the gods.

The Thor's Hammer is the only weapon, which can be used in destroying Jörmungandr.

When used in combat, the Thor's Hammer is capable to create powerful energy bolts of long range. They're so powerful, that enemies fly high in the air when stuck by them.

Historical Precedent

Miniature replicas of Thor's Hammer were widely popular in Scandinavia, worn as amulets and even put into people's graves. Some of these found replicas date back from the 9th to 11th centuries. [2]

In modern usage, the Thor's Hammer is a popular symbol in Scandinavian logos and iconography. [3]

A giant representation of Thor's Hammer is seen in the original Tomb Raider, in St. Francis Folly, in a room dedicated to Thor.

The hammer can and, in order to complete the level, must be brought down by Lara. She needs to stand on a square below till it creaks and comes falling down. Upon hitting the square Lara stood on, it will make two movable stone blocks appear.

In the remake, Tomb Raider Anniversary, this room is dedicated to the Greek god Hephaestus.
