Jonah Maiava is one of the characters in Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Life

Before Endurance

As a young man, he traveled back to his home country to serve in the army. His strength and almost preternatural ability to detect danger made him a popular member of his unit. And his ability to prepare and cook almost anything didn't hurt either. After sustaining injuries in the line of duty, Jonah was honorably discharged and went to work as a chef in his sister's café in Ngapuhi.

Becoming Part of the Crew

When Conrad Roth was visiting New Zealand, he was impressed by Jonah's strength and later his cooking, and Roth offered Jonah a place on the Endurance.[2]

Yamatai Expedition

Main article: Tomb Raider (2013)

Jonah accompanies the crew of the Endurance as a cook.

When the Endurance is caught in the storm that strands them on Yamatai, he is one of the survivors. Lara shortly sees him at the beach before she is taken by the Scavenger.

They later meet again when Lara is trapped and attacked by wolves, shortly she met Matthias for the first time. He leaves with the other survivors while Lara and James Whitman stay behind to look for Conrad Roth.

At the beach they all meet up again and Jonah presents Lara with a new Bow. They finally set out together on Whitman's trail to rescue Sam. While Lara climbs the monastery he stays behind with Joslin Reyes to cover their backs.

Finally he is able to leave the island together with Lara and Reyes.

Jonah and Lara in Siberia

Lara and Jonah share a bond that evolved out of the things that happened to both of them on Yamatai. When Lara plans her trip to Siberia Jonah accompanies her. Together they climb up the mountain range in order to find the lost city of Kitezh. They get separated by an avalanche. Despite multiple attempts of communicating they both don't know what happened to the other.

Lara tells him to return to the base camp, but instead he starts a search for her. He gets rescued from the wilderness by the Remnant and he and Lara are reunited in the Geothermal Valley.

When the Trinity mercenaries steal the Atlas they take Jonah, too, and set up a trap for Lara. Jonah gets interrogated and tortured by Konstantin. When he tries to free himself, he gets mortally wounded in the process, as he is unable to kill Konstantin when he has him at his mercy. Instead Konstantin stabs him and leaves him dying. Only Jacob's powers are able to save Jonah's life.

Characterization

Jonah has a gentle soul. He knows how to defend himself but is not inherently violent. A good friend to Lara and the rest of the Endurance crew he gives them hope and is a huge factor in helping them to survive. He develops a deep friendship with Lara and accompanies her to Siberia, even though he is not at all convinced that searching for the Divine Source is a good idea.

Family and Friends

Jonah was raised in Hawaii by his maternal grandmother.[3] His father was abusive when he was a little child, and whenever his father became enraged Jonah hid with his brother. It's implied that Jonah's brother is deceased, as Jonah "will swim away and join my brother in the waves" if he's left the last one standing on Yamatai.[4]

Alex Weiss is Jonah's good friend, as Jonah gives Alex a hug when he arrives to seek sanctuary from the Endurance. Jonah is also encouraging Roth to let Alex in on the expedition.[5]
