Original Story

When, at the age of 21, Lara Croft survives a plane crash in the Himalayas, and is forced to make it on her own in the wilderness, her life is changed forever. It takes her two weeks to reach the city of Tokakeriby. (This storyline was changed for Tomb Raider Legend.)

Revised Story

At the age of 9 young Lara and her mother survive a plane crash in the Himalayas. When exploring a nearby temple, Lara touches a mythical Sword. A strange portal opens and someone communicates with them. Lara's mother, misunderstanding what is said at the other end (Amanda Evert telling Lara to pull out the sword), pulls out the sword. She disappears and is transported to Avalon.

Lara has been to Nepal many times over the years, but never back to the terrible place that changed her life forever. She thought she'd never have to return, having learned all she could from the site. New information, however, has turned what she believed upside-down, and the answer to one of her most personal quests might yet be found on that distant Himalayan mountaintop.

Years later, after finding pieces of Excalibur, which is very similar to the sword her mother pulled out, Lara returns to Nepal to collect a brooch her mother lost in the plane. As it turns out this brooch, which also goes by the name Ghalali Key, is the key to reassembling Excalibur. When Lara tries out Excalibur at the Stone Dais in the temple, the dais crumbles to pieces.

After returning from Avalon, in the Tomb Raider Underworld level Out of Time, Lara emerges back in Nepal, right where her mother disappeared years ago.

Comics

Following the trail left by Chase Carver, in the Saga of the Medusa Mask, Lara travels to Kathmandu in Tomb Raider: The Series Vol. 1, Issue 2. After being reunited with Chase, Lara heads out into the mountains to find the mask.
