XP (short for Experience) is a relatively new concept in the Tomb Raider franchise first introduced in the reboot title Tomb Raider (2013) and continued in it's successor, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider (2013)

Reception

Before the game was released there had been some concern regarding the XP system. Fans of the original games feared too many RPG elements had entered into the game, a fear aided by the fact that Square Enix is best known for their series of Final Fantasy RPGs. On the other hand many fans embraced the idea, because it brings a bit of customisability to the game that is more subtle than before. The media has generally been in favour of this new feature.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

The XP system has been adopted in Rise of the Tomb Raider almost without changes. Again, hunting, killing enemies, and solving Puzzles gains the player XP which then turns into skill points to be spent at Base Camps for a wide variety of skills.

There are certain skills that increase the XP yield: Resourceful Combatant, Avid Learner, Duellist Reflexes, and Finesse.

In addition to XP certain Documents and Relics increase Lara's Language Proficiency, which in turn enables Lara to read Monoliths.
