The publication plans of Tomb Raider: The Beginning comic were announced on January 31st 2013 on both the Official Tomb Raider Blog[2] and the Dark Horse website[3]. On the same day a four-page preview of the comic was published on Comingsoon.net.[4]

Global brand director Karl Stewart stated the following about the comic and the co-operation between Crystal Dynamics and Dark Horse:
