In the 2013 reboot Steph is the latest victim of the Scavenger in the first level Scavenger Den. She was a colleague of Lara's on board the Endurance before she was murdered and strung up in a strange ritual.
Until now no official background story has been released, for example her last name and function aboard the Endurance as well as her relationship with her crew mates is still unknown. When later on in the game Lara tells the other survivors of Steph's death, though, they are shocked, so it is reasonable to assume that she was a respected and well liked member of the crew.
