Salvage is one of the pick-up game play elements in the Tomb Raider Reboot and a common Resource in the sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Tomb Raider (2013)
In the level Gated, Lara has to "collect salvage to upgrade the axe". She has to find 50 units of salvage. These can be found in crates Lara can smash open. Usually a crate holds 10 units, one crate - that was hidden in a bundle Lara first has to burn down using her Torch - even holds 20. Having collected all necessary salvage, Lara can return to the nearest Base Camp (called The Gate in this instance) to upgrade the axe.
