They are images painted on thick wooden bases, like Russian icons. The images were created by the Black Alchemist Pieter Van Eckhardt in the 13 or 1400's. Together the Paintings hide something called the Sanglyph or The Blood Sign. Each painting has a metallic symbol of power built into it.

The Paintings were seized by the Lux Veritatis from Eckhardt and painted over with religious imagery by Brother Obscura. After that the paintings were hidden. But Brother Obscura made secret copies of the Paintings, the Obscura Engravings.
