The Bear is an opponent from Tomb Raider 1.
If you cannot get anywhere, where the bear can't reach you, use the Shotgun. The bear does a lot of damage, if he gets you. Try shooting him from somewhere above if possible. In that case Pistols will suffice. You will meet bears in The Cave and City of Vilcabamba.
