Midas - was a character in Greek mythology, who is mostly recognized for his ability to turn anything he touched into gold.
He was king of Pessinus, a city in Phrygia in Asia Minor, who as a child was adopted by Gordias and Cybele. He was known for being a hedonist, and an excellent rose gardener, and according to the myth, he had one son, Lityerses; but in some variations of the myth he had a daughter, Zoe, instead of a son.
Notes
The name 'Colosseum' strictly refers to the Flavian Amphitheatre in Rome. Nearby the apmhitheatre was a Colossus, or enormous statue, of the Emperor Nero, and it has long been accepted that the Colosseum gained its name from its proximity to this statue.

Amphitheatres were common in classical times, being particularly associated with the Romans. They are best known for Gladiator fights, but were used for many forms of public entertainment. They have been found in France, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and Northern Africa.
Tomb of Qualopec is the fourth level of the original Tomb Raider, and the last level of the Peru section.

Story
Having raised the old Incan dam, Lara now enters the tomb of Qualopec. She pulls three switches, each protected by a series of deadly traps, and opens the three gates to Qualopec's burial chamber. In it she finds the Atlantean ruler still sat in his throne, his two guards mummified beside him. On a predestal in the center of the room lies the piece of the Scion that Lara has been searching for. Removing the Scion releases the final trap as the tomb begins to fall apart around her. Avoiding the falling debris, Lara races back to the lost valley where she finds that Larson has been sent after her to steal her piece of the Scion. He attacks her, but Lara manages to overcome him. Bitterly, he reveals that there are other sections of the Scion and that Piere DuPont has been sent after them. Larson makes a futlie attempt to recover his weapon, but Lara has the upper hand, shooting him down again. She leaves him for dead and heads for Natla's headquarters.

Objectives
This is the burial site of the ancient Atlantean ruler, Qualopec. When tragedy befell Atlantis, Qualopec took his people to Peru in South America and tried to rebuild his civilisation there. When he died, he was buried beneath the city of Vilcabamba, protected by his mummified personal guard and a variety of traps.
The Lost Valley is the third level of the original Tomb Raider.

Story
Heading past the city, further into the mountain, Lara discovers a small pocket of tropical climate. It is home to velociraptors and a tyranosaurus rex who survived here past the dinosaurs' mass extinction. The skeletons that litter the cave suggest many an Incan fell victim to these predators. Lara collects three primitive cogs from this valley and uses them to close an ancien Incan dam, allowing her to access the tomb of Qualopec.

Objectives
* Find 3 machine cogs
* Stop the waterfall from flowing
* Gain access to the Tomb of Qualopec

It is believed that the Incans did not possess technology as advanced as cogs.

The Scion is the artefact that Lara searches for in Tomb Raider.

It was created by the three leaders of Atlantis, Qualopec, Tihocan and Natla. It was split into three segments to represent the democratic leadership that the three used in governing Atlantis. Each of the rulers was given a piece of the Scion, which they wore around their necks.

Aware of the power contained in the device, Tihocan and Qualopec were wary of its use, but Natla went against them and used the Scion for her own genetic experiments. When the other two discovered Natla's treachery they condemned her to eternal imprisonment and buried her third of the Scion deep within the city of Khamoon, in Egypt.

After the destruction of Atlantis, Tihocan and Qualopec went their separate ways, travelling to different corners of the world. When each ruler died, they were buried along with their piece of the Scion. Qualopec's tomb is deep within the Andes mountain range in Peru, while Tihocan was buried beneath a vast structure in Turkey.

Lara recovered all three of the lost pieces of the Scion, but it was then stolen from her by Natla. She used it to continue her genetic experiments, but Lara managed to destroy it before it could be used extensively.

The sections now rest safely in Lara's trophy room in her mansion.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary
The Scion will be returning to Tomb Raider: Anniversary in much more detail.

Nothing has been confirmed about it as of yet, but it is expected to have the same powers in the new game, since it resembles an important part of the first Tomb Raider storyline.

Powers
The exact nature of the power of the Scion are unclear. Brother Herbert of St. Francis' Folly described it as possessing "powers beyond the creator himself". It seems that it is essential to Natla's experiments, but exactly why is not explained. It seems that it is the power source for the Great Pyramid, and that the Pyramid itself is the tool for her genetic engineering.

Vilcabamba is the last city of the Incans. When the Spanish conquistadors explored Peru in the 1520's and 30's, the last of the Incans escaped to Vilcabamba, lead by Manco Inca Yupanqui. They lived there for 36 years, making occasional raids on the spaniards. However, in 1572 the Incan stronghold was discovered and the last ruler was captured and executed, bringing the Incan civilisation to an end.

Notes
Vilcabamba is the last city of the Incans. When the Spanish conquistadors explored Peru in the 1520's and 30's, the last of the Incans escaped to Vilcabamba, lead by Manco Inca Yupanqui. They lived there for 36 years, making occasional raids on the spaniards. However, in 1572 the last Incan stronghold was discovered and the last ruler, Tpac Amaru, was captured and executed, bringing the Incan civilisation to an end.
Tomb Raider was the first of the series, the game that started the legacy. It was impressive at the time for it's 3D graphics, player interaction, and mix of action and exploration. It also founded the third person perspective that all subsequent games have used, and introduces the classic Tomb Raider game angine. This game marks the first appearance of the protagonsit of the Tomb Raider games: Lara Corft.

An expansion was released in 1998 faeturing a separate 4-level adventure. This expansion was known as Tomb Raider Unfinished Business. A PDA version was also released, and a Nokia N-Gage version was released in 2003.
Gameplay
Tomb Raider is third person perspective, with the camera following Lara. She can run, walk, vault, shimmy, jump, move blocks, swim, swan dive, roll, shoot and perform numerous acrobatic aerial manoeuvres. She automatically locks on to enemies and can run and jump while locked on, giving her the advantage to jump behind the enemy while shooting it in the back. The AI of enemies is mediocre. When confronted with a lion, it will run, stop to growl, run again, stop to growl again, and so forth. This can be seen as unrealistic, but was impressive at its time, and does little to inhibit the gameplay.

When Lara is jumping to another platform, she must execute a well timed jump for longer distances, with simple stationary jumps for shorter distances. Some platforms may require Lara to perform a running jump, which causes her to grab the edge of the platform and then vault up. To get to another platform, Lara must grab onto the edge of the platform she is standing on, and shimmy across a group of edges before she can vault up. Lara receives dammage from dropping from great height, and a long enough fall will kill her. There are also numerous opponents that will do their best to kill Lara, and a whole host of traps and obstacles that inflict varying degrees of damage.

There are some puzzles in the game but they are more practical than mathematical. For example, some doors may be timed and Lara must use a lever to open it then cross a series of obstacles, usually requiring timed jumps. Some puzzles require the finding of items and keys. The Palace Midas level requires the player to utilise a magical process in order to complete the level.

In the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Tomb Raider, saving the game is restricted to fixed save points within each level, marked by a floating blue save crystal. When Lara touches one of these the option to save is made available. The scarcity of these points, however, means that if the player dies, large portions of each level must be replayed, much to the players' frustration. Following criticism on this system, it was changed in later games. The PC and Mac versions of the game allow the player to save at any time.

Story
Introduction
Lara Croft, daughter of Lord Henshingly Croft, was raised to be an aristocrat from birth. After attending finishing school at the age of 21, Lara's marriage into wealth has seem assured, but on her way home from a skiing trip her chartered plane had crashed deep in the heart of the Himalayas. The only survivor, Lara learned how to depend on her wits to stay alive in hostile conditions a world away from her sheltered upbringing. 2 weeks later, when she walked into the village of Tokakeriby her experience had had a profound effect on her. Unable to stand the claustrophobic suffocating atmosphere of upper-class British society, she realised that she was only truly alive when she was travelling alone. Over the 8 following years she acquired an intimate knowledge of ancient civilisations across the globe. Her family disowned their prodigal daughter, and she turned to writing to fund her trips. Famed for discovering several ancient sites of profound archaeological interest she made a name for herself by publishing travel books and detailed journals of her exploits.
Development
Preliminary work on Tomb Raider commenced in 1993, but it was not until November 1996 that the game actually saw the light of day as a retail product. The title was crafted by Core Design of Europe, who took 18 months to develop it. The team consisted of six people, among them Toby Gard, who is credited with the invention of Lara Croft. The character went through several changes before Core settled on the version she became famous for. In its earliest conception, Lara Croft was a male placeholder for an as yet undefined character, but as Core decided that puzzles and stealth should be more important to the game than action, they found that these requirements better suited a female character than a classic male action hero.

As such Lara was born under the name Laura Cruz. "Laura" was later dropped in favour of Lara, to appeal more to American audiences. At the same time, her back story started to shape up and it was decided she should become more British, hence Cruz was changed to Croft to accommodate this. Personality-wise, Lara was a cold-blooded militaristic type in the early concepts. According to Toby Gard, the idea to make her a female Indiana Jones was not present from the beginning, but rather grew naturally out of the development process as the game took its final form.

Lara's famous breast size was in actuality brought about by accident. Toby Gard was fudging around with the model when he accidentally blew up Lara's bosom to 150% of what he intended it to be. As he was resizing it back to normal, the other designers saw what he was working on and told him they loved it and that he should keep the double size.

Interestingly enough, it is Core's contention that the company was struggling somewhat with 32-bit development at that time. It is also rumoured that Tomb Raider's publishing company Eidos was near bankruptcy when Tomb Raider was created. The first glints of the game were seen on Sega Saturn development kits. However, ultimately, it would be the PlayStation rendition that would be known best.

This small canvas knapsack has leather straps and is used to carry all of Lara's inventory. She found the backpack during her travels with Von Croy at the age of 16. While exploring in Angkor Wat she discovered it in a hidden chamber, along with the skeleton of its unfortunate previous owner. She has carried it with her on her travels ever since and is very rarely seen without it.

Tihocan was one of the three leaders of Atlantis, along with Qualopec and Natla. Together these three created the Scion, a device of amazing power.

When Natla began to misuse the power of the Scion, Tihocan and Qualopec sentenced her to eternal imprisonment, and she was buried in present day Los Alamos. The Scion was split into three and Tihocan and Qualopec each took a piece, burying the third segment in Egypt.

When Atlantis was destroyed, Tihocan and the Atlantean people moved to Greece, where he attempted unsuccessfully to maintain their society. He sired no children, and when he died he was buried, along with his piece of the Scion, in Turkey. His tomb was protected by two Atlantean Centaurs, as well as an extensive system of antechambers.

A monastery was later built on top of Tihocan's tomb.

Tihocan is blind and uses a mechanical visor to see.

How could Pierre be in two games and which one was first?

In Chronicles it was said, that the quest for the Philosopher's Stone was one of Lara's first adventures.

And at the beginning of Tomb Raider 1 it seemed as if Lara had done this kind of job often before.

So I assumed Chronicles was first. In both games it seemed as if Pierre got killed.

- Shot by Lara in the Tomb of Tihocan in Tomb Raider 1.

- Falling down into the depth in the Colosseum in Chronicles.

Pierre's Death
I think that Pierre appeared in Tomb Raider I before Chronicles as it is more likely that he would surviver bullet wounds than a huge fall into a pit!

Controversy over death and events of TR1/Chronicles
This is how I see it:

In Tomb Raider, Larson uses a handgun with a lasersight attached (a much more modern weapon). In Chronicles, he uses a Revolver.
We also know that Larson works with Pierre DuPont.

It is assumed in ONE of the games that Pierre has been killed off, just as Larson managed to dodge a bullet in TR1.

Pierre is
- Shot by Lara in the Tomb of Tihocan in Tomb Raider 1, but we clearly SEE his body lying dead so there is no exception here, the man is dead unless by some magical feat of supernatural interference he is ressurected from the dead which is unlikely in this case (but still a possibility).

- Falling down into the depth in the Colosseum in Chronicles. We know from previous experience of TR games that characters that fall down pits i.e. TR4 end up surviving, so it is logical to believe that the reason Pierre seems to be able to track and hide across the entire European Level of TR1 so well is because he knows the area pretty well i.e. he knows the nooks can crannies of the place inside and out and is able to oddly disappear out of thin air in TR1 when you give chase.

Therefore it is my belief by rational consideration that Chronicles occurs prior to TR1 due to the manner in which Lara also communicates with Larson/Pierre in the first game (TR1), it would appear as though she "may" have had an encounter with them and seems familiar with Larson's double-crossing as well as Pierre's manner, and it would justify why Pierre survives in the Colosseum and being able to understand his whereabouts well enough to have discovered the Tomb of Tihocan, only he was unaware of the scion at this time (Chronicles), and would later re-enter the Colosseum when requested by Ms. Natla to uncover the scion.

This is my understanding of the entire events. It's doubtful that Larson would manage to survive gunshot wounds twice in a row after re-appearing in Egypt later. Of course it is also plausible that the two faked their own deaths, but this did not appear to be the case in TR1 as we could clearly see their dead bodies lying on the floor after Lara had shot them down for the second time in Larson's case, and the final time in DuPont's.
Point on the colisseum
That all sounds reasonable, but you've mistaken the Colisseum in TR5 for the one in the original game. They are, in fact, quite different. I've not played 5 recently, but I'm 90% certain that the colisseum featured there is the real colisseum in Rome. The one in TR, however, is an entirely different construction, built on top of Tihocan's tomb in Turkey/Greece/Italy and should not really be called a colisseum at all (it's an amphitheatre, the colisseum was only named such because of the colossus of Nero which stood near it, i.e. it is not a generic term).

That said, I do agree with you, I've always considered the section in 5 to be set before the original TR. You present a lot of evidence that I agree with.

The Legless Mutant (also referred to as Alien or Atlantean Mutant) is featured in the original Tomb Raider.

This is the final outcome of Natla genetic engineering experiments. It is born from a large egg atop a platform at the top of the enormous main chamber of the Great Pyramid. Lara must fight the beast in order to progress further through the pyramid.

The creature is vaguely reminiscent of an enormous slug, but with two arms and a small head atop its body. It moves by dragging itself along, making it slow and cumbersome. However, this is more than made up for by its strength and stamina. It is easily capable of killing Lara by grabbing her and smashing into the floor, or by pushing her off the side of the ledge resulting in a fall down the entire main chamber to a lava pit at the bottom.

Lara eventually defeats the creature and it explodes, scattering its body parts throughout the chamber.

It is likely that the creature will return in Tomb Raider Anniversay.
The Great Wall is the first level in Tomb Raider II.

Lara' search for the Dagger of Xian begins at the Great Wall of China, supposedly the resting place of this ancinet artifact. Lara arrives by helicopter and abseils to the ground. Between her and the Temple of Xian are a series of secret antechambers filled with traps to protect the dagger.

Having survived the defences, Lara finds a large door bearing the symbol of the dagger and a hole that looks like it needs a key. As she investigates she is attacked by a stranger. She disarms him and he reveals to her that he is a servant of Marco Bartoli. Before she can discover anymore, he drinks from a small bottle of poison, killing himself in front of her. Lara looks around, and discovers a notebook by a nearby camp fire. She needs something to get in to the temple of Xian, and the notebook gives her somewhere to start looking. Venice.

She encounters Tigers, Spiders and two T-Rex.

Lara starts with Pistols and Shotgun in her inventory and she can collect the Grenade Launcher here.

This is also the demo, a venice demo is also avaible.

She disarms him and he reveals to her that he is a servant of Marco Bartolli.

The Scion is the artefact that Lara searches for in Tomb Raider.

It was created by the three leaders of Atlantis, Qualopec, Tihocan and Natla. It was split into three segments to represent to the democratic leadreship that the three used in governing Atlantis. Each of the three rulers was given a piece of the Scion, which they wore around their necks.

After the destruction of Atlantis, Tihocan and Qualopec went their seperate ways, travelling to different corners of the world. When each ruler died, they were buried along with their piece of the Scion. Qualopec's tomb is deep within a mountain in Peru, and Tihocan was buried beneath a vast structure in Turkey.

Lara recovered all three of the lost pieces of the Scion, but it was then stolen by Natla. She used it to continue her genetic experiments, but Lara destroyed it before it could be used extensively.

The sections now rest safely in Lara's trophy room in her mansion.

It seems that it is the power source for the Great Pyramid, and that the Pyrmid itself is the tool for her genetic engineering.

Natla was one of the three legendary rulers of Atlantis, along with Tihocan and Qualopec. Together they created the Scion, a device of immeasurable power. This device was split into three parts, one for each of the rulers, representing the democracy that Atlantis lived by.

Natla abused this power, however, using the Scion to experiment in genetic engineering and create a new, improved race of Atlanteans. When they learned of this, Tihocan and Qualopec sentenced Natla to eternal imprisonment, freezing her and then burying her in present day New Mexico.

During World War II, the U.S. began testing nuclear weapons in Los Alamos, New Mexico. One of these tests happened to detonate very near to Natla's prison, freeing her from her eternal punishment.

Natla adopted the guise of Jacqueline Natla and founded Natla Technologies, a very successful company which gave her considerable financial backing. With the rest of her people long dead, there was no one to stand in the way of her experiments, and she began to research the whereabouts of the Scion.

She hired famous tomb raider Lara Croft to travel to Peru to uncover Qualopec's third, but underestimated both Lara's ability and her moral solidarity. When Larson, another of Natla's employees, revealed to Lara that there was more going on than she originally thought, Lara took up the trail of the Scion, unwilling to blindly hand over such a powerful artefact.

Lara travelled from Peru to Turkey, and then to an ancient city in Egypt collecting the three pieces of the Scion vefore Natla could. However, Natla caught up with Lara on a cliffside in Egypt and stole the completed Scion from her. Natla travelled to the great pyramid, an ancient Atlantean construction, to finally complete her experimentation.

Lara infiltrates the great pyramid and finds the control room at the top of an enormous chasm. With Natla's experiments almost complete, Lara attempts to destroy the Scion before it can be used to create Natla's hideous monsters. Natla jumps on Lara, preventing her from shooting the Scion, but apparently falling to her death far below.

However, Natla is not defeated, she reappears in a final showdown with Lara, this time revealing her true atlantean heritage. She sports red wings and blasts fire balls at Lara. When she is sufficiently damaged she plays dead, lulling Lara into a false sense of security, but will then keep fighting until she is finally killed.

Miss Jacqueline Natla will for sure make a return in tomb raider anniversary voice by Jennifer Hale.

Speculation
At the final stage of Tomb Raider Legend crates can be seen with the Natla Technologies logo referring that Amanda and Jacqueline might be related. That might be explained in Tomb Raider Anniversary. To see the logo search Amanda Entity, click on the photo and look at the crate to Lara's right and you'll see the logo.
His tomb was protected by two atlantean centaurs, as well as an extensive system of antechambers.

After her confrontation with Larson, Lara has doubts about the intentions of her employer, Natla. Lara breaks into the headquarters of Natla Technologies, where she finds the diary of a Brother Herbert, a monk recently relocated to the monastery of St. Francis' folly. Rumour amongst his brothers states that the monastery is bulit on top of the ancient tomb of Tihocan, a legendary ruler of the lost continent of Atlantis. Buried along with Tihocan is his piece of the Scion, an Atlantean artefact with extraordinary power.

Lara travels to Turkey to the monastery, which now lies in ruins.

You will meet lions, gorillas, Pierre DuPont and bats.

It's your task to collect the four keys of Atlas, Neptune, Thor and Damocles anduse them to open to the door leading to the Colosseum.

* Collect the Thor, Damocles, Atlas and Neptune keys
* Unlock the 4 barrier door leading to Colosseum

Notes
* Thor - is the red-haired and bearded nature god of thunder in Norse mythology and more generally Germanic mythology. He is the son of Odin and Jord. He carried a hammer, Mjolnir, as a weapon, and it is said when the hammer struck, lightening was produced.

* Atlas - in Greek mythology was one of the primordial Titans. Atlas was the son of the Titan Iapetos and the Oceanid Klymene. During the Titanomcahy, a mythical war between the Titans and Olympians, Atlas betrayed the Titans and fought with Zeus and his fellow gods. After the Olympians' victory, most Titans were confined to Tartarus, but Atlas was instead condemned to forever hold up the sky.

* Neptune - was the god of the sea, as well as horses and, as "Earth-Shaker", of earthquakes in Roman mythology. He carried a trident as a weapon.

* Damocles - was an excessively flattering courtier in the court of Dionysius I of Syracuse, a 4th Century BC tyrant of Syracuse, Italy. He exclaimed that, as a great man of power and authority, Dionysius was truly fortunate. Dionysius offered to switch places with him for a day, so he could taste first hand that fortune. In the evening a banquet was held, where Damocles very much enjoyed being waited upon like a king. Only at the end of the meal did he look up and notice a sharpened sword hanging by a single piece of horsehair directly above his head. Immediately, he lost all taste for the fine foods and beautiful boys and asked leave of the tyrant, saying he no longer wanted to be so fortunate.

Colosseum is the sixth level in the original Tomb Raider. If you are searching for the Chronicles level, go to The Colosseum.

Through exploration of this ruined amphitheatre, Lara makes her way to the VIP seating area where she finds the entrance to Palace Midas.

In the Colosseum you will meet lions, crocodiles and gorillas.

Objectives
* Enter the main arena
* Find the Rusty Key
* Use the key in the Royal Box to gain access to Palace Midas

Notes
The name 'Colosseum' strictly refers to the Flavian Amphitheatre in Rome. Nearby the apmhitheatre was a Colossus, or enormous statue, of the Emperor Nero, and it has long been believed that the Colosseum gained its name from its proximity to this statue.

Amphitheatres were common in classical times, being particularly associated with the Romans. They are most commonly associated with Gladiator fights, but were used for many forms of public entertainment. They have been found in France, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and Northern Africa.
