The Ark of the Covenant was decribed in the Bible as a sacred container, holding the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod and manna. It was built at the command of God on Mount Sinai. God was believed to have communicated with Moses "from between the cherubim" on the Ark's cover.(ref?) The Ark has achieved near-mythological status in recent history, having been the object of countless searches and unproven claims of possesion, with many divergent popular stories of its fate.

In the original Tomb Raider the Ark of the Covenant is seen at the front of Lara's Manor, implying that she had discovered it and was now using it as an ornamental trophy. However it was absent in the game's remake due, apparently, to Indiana Jones copyright issues,(ref?) although character designer Toby Gard does refer to it in the game's unlockable commentary.
