Full Story

Lara is held captive by a person who's identity has not yet been revealed. She frees herself and storms back outside to check on her bodyguard Hartford Compton, who has been pierced by an arrow, and is greeted by a storm of arrows. The unidentified man pulls her back once more, revealing his identity. It is Chase Carver and his intend was to keep Lara safe. He kisses Lara and she reacts by telling him to never do that again if he likes to stay unhurt. They flee into a store room to escape the assassins. Stuck there, they discuss their options. Lara suggests to fight the men, but Chase is less optimistic that they'd win. Just when Chase suggests the side door, the assassins break through the door and storm in. A fight ensues. When the assassins try to burn down the store room, Chase decides to shoot some barrels making it worse, as they held kerosene. They climb up to the roof and then slide down a cable to escape. When Chases pants come lose, Lara, who held on to him, falls down and lands in the truckload of pigs.

Back at the hotel, with Lara freshly showered, Chase and Lara are visited by Constable Akham. He tells Lara that they have found no trace of Compton or the criminal Taj, who were both supposedly killed. After the constable leaves, Lara asks Chase to reveal everything he knows about the Medusa Mask. Chase tells her that he's found a message in a bottle in the wreckage.

"It's been three weeks sailing, since we departed Spain, and six days full since the madness took over. Some evil force drove the rest of the crew to mutiny and murder the captain, crew and passengers. 'This no less than a voyage into hell itself, and such a voyage can have only one ending. In consideration of the treachery on board, I have decided to abandon this vessel for something ... some unspeakable evil, compels us to kill one another. Even though I've decided to flee, I'll not do so... without the treasure. Let this note mark the watery grave which surely awaits the blackguards and murderers I sail with, for their souls are most certainly confined to hell eternal."

Chase reveals that the writer of the note was Henri Triplette and that he was rescued by an English vessel bound for America. However the ship never reached its destination; instead it arrived in China months later.

Chase and Lara head into the mountains to find the key that is supposed to point the way to the Medusa Mask. Lara is surprised when they find it easily, wondering why no one else ever found it. Chase reveals that an avalanche cleared the area just recently. Lara examines markings she finds on a stone wall, noting that each symbol consists of three strokes, possibly hinting at Henri Triplette's surname. Chase and Lara push the wall in and fall down into a pit behind it.
